Step 3 – Time Off-Grid
To determine battery capacity, decide how long you want to run on battery power.
As outages have become longer and more frequent, a good place to start may be 4 hours.
Battery capacity is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). Calculate this by multiplying your essential load (kW) by the number of hours (h) you may be without power, and doubling that number.
Step 4 – Add Solar
The solar power required to support your essential load and charge your batteries once a day.
Add the essential load that you want to support during the day to the capacity of your batteries. This is the total power that your solar panels need to deliver during daylight.
Step 5 – Additional Costs
Now you have an overview of the system you are considering. Additional costs will be for the wiring, connections, protections and labour to install the system.
Always insist on a Certicate of Compliance (CoC) from your installer.
